It's the go-to palette for celebrities looking to make an impression on that all-important red carpet.
But while black and white may have been a safe choice for stars Emma Stone and Alexa Chung at the Cannes film festival yesterday, their choice of dresses were anything but.
Ms Stone, 35, shunned a longer gown for the premiere of new movie Kinds Of Kindness, opting for a short tuxedo dress by Louis Vuitton.
She teamed it with a black belt and heels – leading to unkind onlookers saying her outfit resembled a judo robe.
Meanwhile Ms Chung, 40, chose an embellished couture Jean Paul Gaultier gown – with quirky breast plate – for a screening of musical crime comedy Emilia Perez.

Ellie Goulding is getting a scolding – for suggesting supermarkets should include alcoholic drinks in their meal deals. The eco-friendly pop star, 37, has, by way of her cocktail company Served, launched a petition to make stores consider the 'amazing' idea.
But Millie Booth, founder of campaign group Sober Girl Society tells me: 'Ellie has spoken about the negative effect alcohol has had on her life so it's such a disappointing move from someone who knows the potential impact such a move could have.'
Ellie, right, once said she 'used alcohol to be more funny and interesting' after struggling to deal with fame. Perhaps she should stick to pop!

Fox's new club
Britain's leading acting dynasty is expanding. TV star Jack Fox, brother of thespian turned political rabble-rouser Laurence, is to become a father.
His wife, musician Eleanor Fletcher, 31, has shared a photo of herself cradling her prominent bump. 'Yes, she's pregnant,' says Jack, 38, son of actor James and cousin of Emilia and Freddie.
Jack, who dated film star Lily James before meeting Eleanor, online in 2021, adds: 'I have not accepted that I'll no longer be the centre of attention. Wait. Was I ever the centre of attention?'

Stephen Fry chose an odd way to celebrate victory in his campaign to allow women to join the Garrick Club – by dining at the all-male Beefsteak Club, which doesn't allow female guests and where every waiter is referred to as Charles, for ease.
Church sermon
Having spent hundreds of pounds on tickets, politically minded Glastonbury punters will be able to head to the so-called Left Field to hear from the likes of Angela Rayner (who might like to stick around for the debate on the housing crisis) and Charlotte Church.
Let's hope the Welsh singer, part of the 'radical round-up with Billy Bragg', is better behaved than in 2016 when she told the crowd: 'I'll let you in to a little secret, I've partied way too f
